After a well received demonstration in 2002 the New Richmond High School again invited the Guild to provide a turning demonstration for its students. Since the first demonstration the school has purchased two new Jet mini lathes and a tool sharpening system to complement the one larger lathe in their woodworking equipment inventory. On March 13th six members of the Guild provided a turning demonstration at the High School. Approximately 40 students from woodworking classes and art classes attended the turning event and had an opportunity to practice turn and "make chips fly". The Guild team was led by John Lannom who set-up and coordinated the successful event. Guild members participating in the demonstration included the following:
Under the guidance of a Guild member, each student was provided an opportunity to make practice cuts on green wood. Based on the quantity of shavings at the end of the demonstration it appeared that the event was successful. The students had a keen interest in wood turning. In fact, at the end of the session the faculty members had to make a real effort to get the students from the demonstration area and on to their next class. The school needs some quality tools for their students. The needs include both spindle and bowl gouges, scrapers, cut off tools and chucks. If you wish to donate any tools to the New Richmond High School do not hesitate to contact John Lannom or Earl Choromokos and they will make arrangements to assure the gift reaches the school. |
