What is this?
The students need to bring turned pieces to practice different embellishments on. They should be made from closed pore dry wood (maple, cherry, pear, birch). The items can be wide rimmed bowls or platters, hollow forms or end grained vessels. Platters of at least 8 inches would work best. The tenon should be left on the pieces. The pieces will be painted with Gesso or Milk Paint. Patterns will be created on the dried pieces using a variety of powered or hand-held carvers. Students will need to bring their own carving tools such as micro-motor carvers, Dremels, reciprocating carvers or hand-held carving tools. A tooth brush or radial bristle discs are needed to clean the carved surfaces. A sand bag or some other sort of device to hold the piece steady would be helpful. It would also be helpful to have a hair dryer or heat gun to assist with the drying process. Fee is $125.00 and includes materials.
