Promoting the art and craft of wood turning in the greater Cincinnati area

Date: 10/11/2019
Subject: OVWG Member Appreciation Luncheon
From: Jerry W Warner

Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild

The following is an announcement of a Member Appreciation Event that has been approved by the Board of Directors of the OVWG.  This is one way that the Board has chosen to recognize the many contributions made by our members.  While the membership fees that you pay are of some importance to the financial well being of the organization, they are minor when compared to the many other contributions that you make as mentors, open shop coordinators, instructors, suppliers of wood, maintenance experts, and in many other roles.  As a volunteer run operation, we could not do it with out you.  If you are a relatively new member without the skills and expertise to make these types of contributions we still want you to join us for this event. As you gain skills and confidence your time to contribute will come.   We realize that your social calendar is likely to become crowded during December so we hope you will place this on your calendar now in order to save the date.  Below, you will find all the details of what is planned for the day.  If you have questions feel free to contact me at jw.warner455@gmail.com or 859 442-0410.

Sincerely,
Jerry Warner
Immediate Past President

Member Appreciation Luncheon/Holiday Celebration

When:  Saturday, December 7, 2019; 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m

Where:  Kennedy Heights Arts Center Lindner Annex; 6620 Montgomery Road, Kennedy Heights, OH 45213; In the Events Center where our monthly meetings occur.

Planned Events:

    1.  Contest - The contest piece is to be an ornament that obviously includes turned elements. It should be one that can be hung on a tree.  This is something almost anyone can do so give it a shot.  Having more people compete makes for a better contest.  Make sure to register your piece with the secretary, David Wright, when you arrive.

   2.  Gift Exchange - This is an opportunity to go home with a nice piece turned by one of your fellow members that you will treasure for years to come.  The exchange piece that you bring should be one that you would be happy to display in your home - not something that you just want to get rid of.  Hopefully you will end up with something equally impressive to take home.  Your gift should be wrapped or enclosed in a gift bag (wrapped in tissue paper) where it is not visible by peeking in the bag.   John Westrup will be coordinating the gift exchange.  He will provide each participant with a number as gifts are deposited with him.   As numbers are called each participant will be able to select from all of the gifts available at the time.  Guests may participate if they bring a gift (turned piece) to exchange.

    3.  Holiday Luncheon - As a way of demonstrating how we value your participation and the many contributions you make, the OVWG is providing a holiday luncheon to all of our members.    You may also bring your spouse or a guest.  There will be no charge for your meal, but we ask that you pay $15 for your spouse/guest.  The meal is being catered by Venice on Vine and service will begin between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  You will have three main courses to choose from as follows:  roast turkey; Swiss steak; and a vegetarian dish of lentils and rice.  So that we can prepare properly, when you register you will need to specify which of the main dishes you want.  These will be served as you come through the buffet line - no changing at the last minute.  Along with these main dishes you will have access to a tossed salad (assorted dressings), mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter, drinks, and desserts.  You must register so that we know how many to prepare for.  We will need to have you complete your registration no later than close of business (5:00 p.m.) on Saturday, November 30, 2019.  I will be back in touch with you as soon as the registration screen is ready - within the next week or so.  The size of the room limits us to approximately 150 people so I encourage you to register as soon as you receive notification from me. In other words the early bird gets the free lunch.

   4.  Music for Your Dinning Pleasure - One of our members, Paul Harkins, is a member of the Cincinnati Dulcimer Society and as such plays a number of instruments.  He has arranged for 8-10 members of the group to entertain us during lunch.  They will have mountain dulcimers, an autoharp, and a guitar and will play a mix of traditional music, patriotic songs, modern songs, some carols, and others as time permits.

   5.  Enjoy and Be Sociable - One of the comments we often get from surveys of our members is that there is never enough time to socialize with other members.  Well, that is what this is all about. This is the start of a very busy time of the year for most of us, but we hope you will make time to join us for this opportunity to thank all of those who have worked so hard to make the Ohio Valley Wood Turners Guild an organizations that we can all (over 325 of us) take great pride in.
