OVWG 2021 Symposium
Chairperson Introduction & Request for Volunteers
I’m honored to serve as the OVWG 2021 Symposium Chairperson. I’ve been a member of OVWG since 2011. I’ve attended the symposia in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. My only regret is missing the symposium in my first year of membership. After learning so much during the symposia and from all of the mentors in OVWG, this is a great opportunity for me to give back to the guild.

Professionally, I’m an IT executive that has worked the full range of companies from Fortune 50 to start-ups. I also serve on the board of a few companies in Columbus. In my professional roles, I’ve organized very large, global teams and delivered extremely complex analytic solutions. There’s no denying that I’m a geek. On the woodworking side, I started out in “flat” work and have managed to make 2/3 of the furniture in our home. I shifted my focus to woodturning in 2010 for a more artistic outlet.

Our 2021 Symposium will be October 14-17, 2021 at Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center in West Harrison, IN. It’s never too early to start planning for the next symposium. You may not be aware, but the planning for our biannual symposium starts before the last symposium is done. It’s hard to believe how far in advance we need to plan. Facilities and professionals are booked a few years in advance. The planning process is a bit easier since our teams have taken extensive notes and provided templates since at least 2015. So while we have room to get creative and offer exciting changes, we’re not working from a blank canvas.

We have lots of opportunities for people to participate. We’d love to have you on one of the teams. Whether you have the gift of hauling heavy equipment, preparing wood, removing sawdust, running cameras, printing binders, acquiring and preparing auction items, welcoming people at the entrance, helping with marketing, assisting the demonstrators or coordinating vendors, we have the perfect outlet for your talents. If you’d like to develop one of these many talents, we have the guides and coaching to help you contribute. An event of this magnitude requires a lot of help to ensure the guild’s success.

Our symposium is highly regarded nationwide and known by many of the professionals. My predecessors have done a great job (and I have big shoes to fill). Please take the opportunity to get involved proactively. As you can probably guess, I’ll be making phone calls and sending emails to enlist volunteers. I look forward to seeing you at a future meeting to answer any questions and enlist your support. I also welcome your suggestions on changes we can make to improve our symposium.

Thanks, James Brenza
