Project no 1.  Functional bowl.  Every aspect of basic bowl turning is covered from harvesting and drying the wood, design, techniques used including the “irish grind” and finishing.

Project no 2. Crooked grain container.  This project is a skill stretcher. For instance, how do you get a perfect curve on the inside of a box lid? It also teaches how to make the grain appear to match from lid to body in such difficult situations as burl, spalted and crotch figure. It involves replacing the wood you remove when parting the lid from the body with a band of contrasting wood.

Project no 3. Deep bowl with wide rim.  This is also a skill stretcher. The wide rim is undercut as far as possible using conventional tools. The long straight side and short curve where the side meets the bottom on the inside requires extra skill with the irish grind.

Project no 4. (Optional) Electric chainsaw as turning tool. This demo arose out of  interest in how I create giant outdoor turned sculpture. I attach the saw through holes in the bar to a T rest in the banjo; like any tool rest. The saw is always under tight control. I use a log of softwood but only show the various cuts as it would not be feasible to do a complete project.
