About this event
This class is designed for people who have some basic experience on how to use a bowl gouge and have turned at least one bowl. At the beginning students will see a demonstration of how to prepare a bowl blank from dry wood. Following this, each student will be provided a dry wood bowl blank with a diameter of 6 to 8 inches. The first step will be showing students how to mount their bowl blank. The goal is to mount the blank so that growth rings are symmetrically arranged in the bottom of the finished bowl. The primary tool to be used is a bowl gouge. We will begin by demonstrating how to sharpen the tool and by sharpening it if necessary. Once this is done the instructor will demonstrate how to turn a bowl. During this demonstration, students will be instructed on how they are to present the tool to the wood. They will then start the turning process as guided by the instructor. Since this is a dry wood bowl, students will finish turn the blank to approximately 3/8" to 1/2". Once this stage is completed the bowl should be completely sanded and ready for finish. Once the bowl is sanded, students will remove the tenon and sand the bottom. Each student will leave the class with a bowl that is ready for finish to be applied.
Tools required: Bowl gouge, detail gouge, round nose scraper (optional) - tools are provided but you may bring your own. Each student should bring their own sanding supplies and a power sander.
Skill Level: Novice to intermediate.
Pre-requisite: Must have completed the Introduction to Woodturning and the OVWG Learning Center; Read and be familiar with AAW Lathe Safety Guidelines and the Glossary of Woodturning Terms (available on the OVWG website in the document library).
