Tools & Techniques for Bowls, Spindles, and Replication

April 20, 2024 - Ernie Conover

OVWG monthly meeting starting at 9:00 am

Register online or check in at the door:

     Demo - Ernie Conover - 4/20/2024

Ernie Conover - woodturning author, teacher, and lathe designer

We’re pleased to have Ernie Conover join us on April 20 for a demonstration & discussion on tools & techniques for spindle turning, tool sharpening, replication, and making bowls efficiently.

Ernie Conover is a highly published author in the woodworking field with nine books, dozens of videos and hundreds of articles to his credit. When not writing, lecturing or consulting, he is active teaching at Conover Workshops. Through his books, articles, videos, lectures and hands-on workshops, he has taught thousands of people to turn. In Ernie’s own words, "I am a cabinetmaker with a turning problem." He was part of the focus group that formed the American Association of Woodturners in 1985, served on the Founding Board, and still holds membership number 004.

Ernie is also a lathe designer having developed his own lathe and worked on the designs of the Nova and the Powermatic 3520b.

Ernie’s demonstration will include the following:

 - Bowl Turning using the 40/40, Irish and Vector Grinds

 - How to turn bowls efficiently and quickly

 - Spindle turning and the proper sharpening of the spindle tools

 - Replication: Turning spindles that look alike and will make fine furniture

Ernie will be discussing and demonstrating various ways to grind and use bowl and spindle gouges in his demo. If he has time, he will make a snap lid box.

His Sunday class will give further instruction and opportunity to use and practice his techniques under his close supervision.
Register for a hands-on learning experience with Ernie himself:   Class - Techniques for bowls, spindles, sharpening - Ernie Conover - 4/21/2024

Ernie firmly believes that gouges are the most important tools in a turner's kit. A gouge's shape, as well as how it is sharpened, is of vital importance. Not all gouges are created equal, and a badly made gouge will simply frustrate your learning process.

His most recent book is the 3rd Edition The Lathe Book, published by Taunton Press.

March Meeting

Special thanks to Greg Gallegos for his demonstrations of podlets and embellishment techniques at the March meeting.
Greg proved to be the mayor of Podlettown. Without breaking a single piece, he demonstrated how to turn a very thin stem and then bend it using a microwave oven and a coffee mug.  With the use of carving tools and inks, Greg demonstrated a variety of techniques to embellish a workpiece.

Cheese Platter:

KC Kendall provided the ingredients to create a cheese platter with a marble insert.  A tasty tip to share - repurpose a mortise.  A mortise on the top side is used to finish the bottom side of the platter.  If the marble insert in the center is set up to be removable, the mortise can also be used to hold a similar sized bowl for chip dip.

Ball-and-Cup

It was time to have fun making a Ball-and-Cup toy in Bev Connelly’s Skill Building Session for Intermediate members.  In a round about way, the session started with making a sphere and then designing a cup to fit the sphere - all from the same workpiece blank.  Techniques included sphere making, hollowing with a Forster bit, caliper measure, and creating pieces that fit inside another. With Bev and Mark’s expert guidance in efficiently turning the workpieces, the biggest challenge was catching the ball in the cup.
