PYRO OPEN SHOP! 6:30 UNTIL 8:30PM!
Bring a project to work on, or a flat piece of wood that you can practice on. If you do not have a pyro unit, there are 5 available to use for the evening. Email Mary Carol Meinken to reserve one. Come prepared to learn and have fun!
The session is open to any OVWG member interested in participating in embellishing their work with pyrography. There will be equipment available if you do not have your own equipment. This is a sharing of knowledge interest group where we learn from one another. If you do not have equipment, it is a good place to learn what is available before purchasing equipment.

Featured Skill: Introduction to knobs and spheres on the Lathe.

This event is focused on presenting opportunities for new turners to learn and practice fundamental skills of woodturning. Each session uses one or more basic tools including the spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool, scraper, and bowl gouge. Over several sessions, turners are exposed to different ways to mount wood on a lathe, roughing to round, and turning consistent beads, coves, Vs, and curves. Over the course of these sessions, basic design elements are introduced and the basics of sanding and finishing are presented.

Tools and materials are supplied. There is no cost for this event but turners must register to attend. Registration is limited to eight (8) turners .

Once you have developed the skills required to turn a decent bowl, you will want to challenge yourself in other areas of woodturning. Turning a hollow vessel is one such way. It is not really that different from bowl turning except that the opening into the top of the piece is much smaller.To complete the outside of the piece you will use the same techniques that you used for turning the outside of a bowl. The challenging part will be cleaning out the inside to make the piece hollow.

Begin with a cylindrical turning blank. Turning on several axes yields a basic six-ribbed shape. After mounting this on another axis, further turning offers a huge range of shaping opportunities, such as ‘flowers’. ‘Ribble’ is a nonsense name, inspired by an old commercial – my “Ribbles have ridges”.

This class is designed for people who have some basic experience on how to use a bowl gouge and have turned at least one bowl. At the beginning students will see a demonstration of how to prepare a bowl blank from green wood. Following this, each student will be provided a green wood bowl blank with a diameter of 6 to 8 inches. Skill Level: Novice to Intermediate.

Beginning with a simple wooden disk. Using multiple offsets, create a "rose" with three to six sets of petals using intersecting cuts. Enhance the surfaces with beading. Create a "petal edge" by cutting away the outer circular edges. Add interwoven rings in the central medallion using additional offsets. Skill Level: Intermediate with comfort turning platters.

Begin with a simple wooden disk. Make multiple concentric cuts using a repeated profile, simple or complex. Saw the disk into thin wedges, then rearrange the pieces to form a ‘flower’, mask, wings, spiral, or another design. Glue the pieces together to create a unique wall hanging.
